SmartCane is a revolutionary mobility aid designed to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings more safely and independently. Developed by AssisTech, IIT Delhi in collaboration with Phoenix Medical Systems, SmartCane was launched in 2014. The device is an enhancement of the traditional white cane, equipped with ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles up to 3 meters away, including objects at head height, which regular canes often miss. The interaction design of SmartCane is highly intuitive. It uses vibrations to alert the user of obstacles, with different vibration patterns indicating varying distances. This simple yet effective feedback mechanism allows users to make decisions in real time, avoiding hazards that may pose danger to them. The device is lightweight, affordable, and designed for ease of use in everyday life, catering specifically to the needs of users in developing countries. SmartCane has transformed the experience of mobility for its users by providing them with more confidence and independence. Its cost-effective design makes it accessible to a broader demographic, contributing to improved quality of life for many visually impaired individuals across India and other regions.
