Abhikalpa is the six-monthly journal of the Industrial Design Centre. In Sanskrit, "Abhi" means in the direction of, and "Kalpa" means plan or proposal, and Abhikalpa means "Design". The drawings of "wolves" on the cover were drawn by the students of a primary school in a village in Madhya Pradesh. The covers of this edition of "Abhikalpa" are very interesting for two reasons. First, the students had never done drawings before, so they had no notion of what a drawing was supposed to be like. The second reason was that none of them had ever seen a wolf. The executive editor of Abhikalpa was Kriti Trivedi, and the editorial board included: A.G. Rao, U.A. Athavankar, and Ravi Poovaiah. The two authors in this edition, L.K. Das and A.G. Rao's article, stress the need for designers to shed inhibitions as an essential condition for creativity. Despite the fact that design educators all over the world recognise this need, design education in most design schools ends up being a process of conditioning the students' minds. The following articles are included in this edition: Epistomology and Techno-cultural Evolution by L.K. Das; Designing of Form for Vastu-Devata by Dr. Prabhakar Apte; Aesthetics of Problem Perception-Pedagogy of a creative Act by A.G. Rao; Product perception through Sound by Jayesh Panchal; Structure of Form: A series based on Perception and Information Processing (Part 2) by U.A. Athavankar; Kothi-a container for keeping things cool by Haku Shah.
