Tools, technologies, and finishes centred on design play a significant role in the development of bamboo  crafts. Creation of value-added items meaningful to 13 lakh craftspeople living in remote parts of the country. The Industrial Design Centre has been working on bamboo crafts for more than a decade. ‘Jagruti, a national workshop on bamboo craft design’ organised in 1993, brought designers,craftsmen,students, officials, and entrepreneurs together. A publication, ‘Bamboo Craft Design', was released in 1994 as an outcome of the workshop. IDC took up a UNDC-financed project on tools, small technologies, and finishes in bamboo and cane through the Development Commission [Handicrafts]. IDC developed 97 tools, a toolkit, small machines, and new technologies under this program. Several treatments for the prevention of fungus and protection from insects have been developed. Bamboo Studio has taken shape at IDC with the increasing activities in bamboo craft.
