In a world that continues to be torn by ethnic strife, wars, environmental destruction, petty politics and a widening gap between the rich and the poor, Auroville stands as a notable experiment towards manifesting a sustainable future for mankind. It was founded as a project of Sri Aurobindo Society in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, also known as The Mother. She was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. The township is endorsed by the Government of India and is universal - men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, politics and nationalities. Thus, collaborative research and project realization can be found in many areas such as aforestation, alternative farming, water related implementations, solar and wind energy, electric vehicles, building technologies and waste management.
