The weaving process has modernized from manual to high-end machines and tools at Dharmavaram, located in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Dharmavaram silk saris are traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique and it is famous for broad solid colored borders with contrast pallu woven with brocaded golden patterns. The design is made on the punch card through computer and loaded on Jacquard in the loom. Two sets of yarns are intertwined/interweved to form a fabric or cloth. One of these sets is called a warp, which runs from the rear end to the front of the loom lengthwise. The other set of crosswise yarns are the filling, called the weft or the woof. This interlocking system of weaving helps in forming the designs in sari, border and pallu.This documentation of weaving process has been done at Dharmavaram, the silk city in Andhrapradesh.
