A residency was established at Faizabad which was the capital of Awadh. The residency moved with Nawab Asaf-ud-daula when the capital of Awadh was shifted from Faizabad to Lucknow. The war for freedom against the East India Company in 1857 was fought in and around the residency campus. The entire Residency complex faced shelling and counter shelling over a long period of 5 months. Dr. Fayrer's was the Residency surgeon during the siege of 1857. Sir Henry Lawrence was shifted to this building after being wounded on 2nd july. He finally succumbed to his injuries on 4th July,1857.
