Dal Lake in Srinagar is famous for its scenic beauty, houseboats and shikaras. But it is also famous for its colourful floating vegetable market, only one of its kinds in India. Farmers with their vegetable laden shikaras come to the market to sell vegetables. You can also spot vendors selling flowers, milk, chocolates or souvenirs at the very same time.
One of the prime tourists attractions in the valley, the market opens at 5 am in and shuts down at 7 am. The annual turnover of the market is estimated to be around Rs. 35 crores. The main market is of lotus stems and roots, both of which are in demand throughout the year. Seasonal vegetables like bitter gourd, tomatoes, brinjals and capsicum are also available in the market. At the very first sight you can never guess who is selling and who is buying these vegetables, but it leaves you awestruck with its vibrant illustrious image in the middle of the lake.
