Gorbad Village

  • Mud and brick houses with tiled roof - most of the houses are painted and were very clean, some decorated with earthen colours. One house was painted in aquamarine blue with carved pillars.

  • Well constructed courtyard and porch area. Most of the houses have a varandah – used for drying things. Residents sleep in their living rooms. Cattle housed in adjoining room/area.

  • The post office is part of a house in the village. The postmaster is a lady and has an assistant to deliver the letters. Both the post master and postman are liked by the villagers.

    2. Money order - 1-3 a day
    3. Bill Payments
    4. Savings scheme – 50 families (25%) .

  • All the villagers are aware of the functions of the post office.About 50 families have saving schemes with the post office.

  • School in the village up to 7th standard . Two teachers teach across the entire number of class. All the standards sit in two big halls. It has a ramp for the wheel chaired.

  • The school is otherwise, well organized in terms of charts, maps, library In the last 10 years around 10 students from the village have completed graduation studies.

  • The smiling faces of the children in the village. All kids in the village are sent to school.

These photographs give a glimpse of the Gorbad village. The Village is surrounded by beautiful landscape and located about 10kms off from the Mumbai - Goa highway at a distance of 17kms from the town of Kolad in Maharastra. The village does not have any phone connection and is not covered by the mobile network.Part of the village got burnt in 1975. Hence, a Gorbad ‘Budruk’ (annexe). Main village is known as Gorbad ‘Khurd’ (main) . The village has many well constructed houses with patterns painted on them. The village has a post office and a woman as a postmaster. The village belongs to the following community – Maratha and Adivasis.
