Kahneri caves is one of the famous tourist place in mumbai where you can see the group of rock cut monument deep in green forest Kahneri caves is situated in Sanjay Gandhi national park and it is 6-7 km away from main gate of National park and 7 km from Borivali railway station. These caves are dated from 1st century B.C to 9th century A.D.
There are total 109 caves. These caves were used as Viharas and Chaityas(temple) by Budhish monks in 2nd and 9th centuries. These viharas were used for studying, living and meditation.
In Kahneri you can find many inscription and epigraphs in Pahalvi, Devnagari and Brahmi. One of the famous inscription found, is about wedding of Vashishtiputra Satakarni with the daughter of Rudradaman.
There are many caves which are worth to see one of them are Cave no-1,11,5, 2, 3, 41, 67, 89, 90 ,21, 98, & 101. You can find many statues of Bhudhha in Kahneri caves carved on the walls.
Kahneri caves are famous among mumbaikars because people can spend there weekend peacefully surrounded with nature.
