Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, opened The National Orchid Garden on 20 October 1995. It is a part of Singapore Botanic Gardens. There are over thousands of species and hybrids displayed beautifully.
Singapore's National Flower 'Vanda Miss Joaquim' was the first orchid hybrid bred in Singapore in 1981. It is named after Miss Agnes Joaquim, who discovered this orchid. It is recognized as hybrid in 1893. It has gardens like VIP Orchid Garden and the Celebrity Orchid Garden. VIP Orchid Garden has hybrids named after such visiting dignitaries and the Celebrity Orchid Garden has hybrids named after visiting 'celebrities'.
