In conversation with Prof. Ravi Mokashi Punekar, Satish reflected on interesting aspects of his motivation for creative work. Born and brought up in Pune, he recollects that his early adolescent days. As part of the Parent Teachers meeting, a group of Rotract Club Members, decided to regularly take school children for visits to the different Industries in the vicinity of Pune, to give them a firsthand exposure of how things are manufactured. These early initiatives were to prove very impressionable on young minds and seem to have been very motivational to pursue a career in Product Design. The exploratory ‘learning by Doing’ methodology of education at NID in the years to follow seems to enhance this search for creativity in problem solving. The symbiotic strength of drawing from Art into Technology seemed only natural.
Ask Satish what qualities should a product designer possess, pat comes the reply - ‘a passion and curiosity for materials and technology, a tinkering mind and drive for excellence’. Qualities that seems reflected in the work that Design Directions has pursued and is known for. The sheer diversity of range of products designed reflect the diversity of domains that Design Directions has indulged in – Medical Products, Textile Machinery, Engineering Processing Machinery, Intelligent Computing Equipment, Agricultural Equipment, Machinery for recycling waste, Branding of Products, Interface Design for Process Equipment.
Therefore, even the list of clientele is as diverse. Each organization benefitting from Design Intervention reflected in the growth of the firm. Recognition for Design Directions and its works have been many.
