Designed for Android OS 3.2, Dastan-e-Dastar – an interactive ebook app challenges the conventional way of reading books. The word ‘Dastan’ means story in Hindi, Punjabi & Urdu; ‘Dastar’ stands for crown in Punjabi & Urdu. Thus, ‘Dastan-e-Dastar’ - the story of Sikh Turbans takes the readers to the world of Turbans, to bring awareness on the cultural heritage from the region of India, Punjab in particular where the tradition of wearing turban is rapidly disappearing.

This e-book focuses at large on the culture of ‘Dastar’ ie; Sikh turbans. The Sikhs in India, as we know consists of the largest population wearing turban. The information about different types of Sikh turbans and its Spiritual & Religious significance in Sikh culture is provided through interactive graphics and animations. One of the chapters of e-book has a set of video based instructions on how to tie different types of Sikh Turbans and also a feature tool to make their own customised turban avtars. Readers are also given space in this e-book to document & share their memories and experiences associated with turbans, which they can directly upload to their blog or any other social networking site.

The concept of my proposed interactive e-book goes way beyond today’s modestly enhanced PDFs and ePubs. It is designed as an application called ‘book based app’, containing, video, animations, kinetic typography, touch screen interactivity and socially-generated content.

The concept of an interactive e-book app will allow a person to share information and ideas and add to the expandability of this electronic medium which ensures greater access to cultural material, making sure that such material will be available for future generations.

With tabs becoming the popular mode for reading e-books, this expandable interactive e-book for android based tablets shall attempt to raise awareness about the true history of the turban and its significance for Sikhs. It will allow both Sikhs and non-Sikhs to share information and ideas so as to spread awareness about Sikhism and wipe social discriminations.
