'The Great Deluge' or 'Yet another Monsoon Morning' – This short animation film story more specifically looks at how the rain affects the people in the city. The theme for the animation is the city of Mumbai. The premise for the story is set in a six floor, seemingly improbable building, where the inhabitant of each floor deals with the excessive rain in his or her own quirky way.
As much as the rain is the common binding theme that ties all the characters together, some of the more subliminal themes in this animation are of the diverse nature of the people that inhabit the place and a degree of kinship that all these characters share as neighbours. The setting of the house, as a defective shell of the people living in it, echoes in some ways the low quality of living that most people in the city accept in a defeated sort of way.
Objective:
The Objective of this project was to go through the process of creating an animation using a blend of 3D and 2D animation techniques. The film, approximately 5 minutes and 18 seconds long, was created using a blend of conventional 3D modelling and animation and pixilation (stop motion animation using human actors).
The method used tries to break away from conventional 3D animation that has in many ways been overdone and over used to a point where people are now almost numbed by overexposure to the medium. The attempt here is to use an older technique blended with a newer one to come up with a style that is hopefully fresh and adaptable by those who choose to do so.
The narrator points out that the idea behind this story is not to generate awareness of the plight of the people of the city or to complain about the way things are. Neither is it a testament to the united spirit of the Mumbaikars of Mumbai. Rather, it is probably best described as a representation of a few of the collected experiences of the city when he was a newcomer to it.
The narrator whose simple belief that 'the humour is a potent vehicle to communicate an idea that will remain fresh in the mind of the observer' intended that this animation be viewed by a very general audience. The core of the thought behind this project has been to look at our environment and the difficulties it poses in a lighter vein.
