With a history starting in the 300 BC, the hill derives its name from Chandragupta Maurya who visited the place to attain religious peace. Chandragiri situated about 3049 feet from sea level and 200 feet above ground level, covers the town's northwest entrance. Vast distribution of granite rock and small boulders can be found in the path reaching its peak. Of the total 106 memorials at Shravanabelagola, strongly associated with the Jain tradition, 92 are preserved on the hill.
