In the Punjab region, wood inlay work took off approximately 200-250 years. Wooden products of Hoshiarpur due to its unique craftsmanship occupied a considerable place in various news items, magazines and other circular papers. Inlay is a technique of inserting pieces of contrasting colors into the hollow spaces to create a design. It involves engraving foliage patterns, and simple everyday designs are inlaid with either acrylic, plastic, bronze or camel bone. Various products such as inlaid table and chair sets, chest boxes, corners, chess boards, jewelry boxes, trays, elephants and several other items of everyday use are easily spotted in Hoshiarpur.

Artist Shri Rupan Matharu is the fifth generation in the family maintaining inlay craft and is luminary among today's inlay work artisans. He has a distinction of being honoured with State Award in the year 1989 by the Government of Punjab. National Award 1997 was presented by Bharat Ratan Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Shilp Guru Award 2016 was presented by Textile Minister Shrimati Smriti Zubin Irani and Raman Singh Chief minister of Chhattisghar.
