The 21st century is, when ‘gender identity’ is a major area of study to understand the human mind. The biological sex is a physical configuration whereas gender is much more layers to unfold. Today, many of us are struggling to decode the intricacies of the non-binary gender spectrum. Transgender people, though they were given imperative roles in the royal courtyards of Mughal emperors, their downfall came only at the onset of British rule during the eighteenth century when they were blacklisted and treated as criminal elements in society. Only in 2014, India’s Supreme Court made a landmark ruling by declaring that transgender people must have access to equal opportunity in society. In spite of this legal recognition, transgenders at large have been forced to live on the fringes of contemporary Indian society.
This project is an attempt to understand the social challenges of the transgender communities of India. My aim is to empathize with the struggle which coexists with the social stigma. Though the common people get intimidated by the approach of transgender people, here I wish to create a sense of acceptance through a narrative inspired by real-life stories.
