One of the basic needs of human being is to communicate with each other. Telephone is a technology which is developed for the hearing people. But for deaf and mute people, there are other ways of communications like – Sign Language and Lip reading.
Though the people who are deaf and mute seem to be completely ignored by the technology developers and the stakeholders; the mobile phones are hugely adopted by the deaf and mute users for text messaging. Even in India the SMS (Short Messaging Service) is becoming popular among the deaf and mute users because it is the only way of communication available for them.
Hence the project 'Mobile Phone for Deaf' was undertaken with the aim "To conceptualize the mobile phone which will help deaf users to solve communication problem and will create an interface which will give a feel of communication."
During the design process of project development, user studies were conducted along with existing technologies to understand the basic needs of deaf and mute users. After analyzing the user limitations and problem identification, concepts were generated, developed before designing final prototype.
