Daulatabad fort lies on the Aurangabad - Ellora road (National Highway 211), on the outskirts of Aurangabad, at a distance of 13-15 km from city. This fort, situated atop hill was originally known as Deogiri, was renamed as Daulatabad - 'The city of fortune' by Mohammed Bin Tughluq, the sultan of Delhi. Fort is situated on top of a high hill, and is encircled by thick walls, spiked gates, steep slide ways and a deep trench. The fort has a coiled network of secret, subsurface passages. There are several interesting places to visit within. Places like Aamkhas building, Kalakot gate, Baradari, Dark Passage (Andheri), Moat (Khandak), Chini Mahal (Royal prison), Chand Minar, Bharat Mata Temple, Hathi Haudh (Elephant Tank), Rock-cut ditch (Khai), Cannons etc. are worth visiting. Daulatabad Fort Museum : The Aamkhas building is now converted into a museum with a courtyard and sculptures are displayed all around the courtyard.
