The stone carving in Varanasi is unique compared to other states in India. They use soft stone, locally known as Gorara, which comes from mines in Chunar and Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. This stone is prized for its range of colors and ease of carving. People make bowls, plates, and glasses from it.
Stone carving has been happening for a long time, even in ancient times. Initially, sculptures were mostly of humans, then animals, and later more abstract forms. In northern India, undercut carving is popular. One famous product is an undercut elephant. Varanasi is a major center for stone carving in Uttar Pradesh. Artisans there carve various items from soapstone, like lamp stands, bowls, screens, candle stands, and decorative pieces.
