The aim of the project – 'Learning Aid for Illiterates' was to design an interactive system which helps adult literacy learners to learn how to read Devanagari script and speeds up their learning process.
According to the 2007 figures estimated by UNESCO Institute for Statistics in September 2008, the facts about literacy rate were as per below:
• 269.8 million people Illiterate in India.
• 30% of Global Illiterates.
• Current literacy rate in India is 66.0 %.
Keeping the facts in mind, the research was done on existing services and solutions available. After few initial experiments, the ideation approach taken was -
• Learning Mode ‐ To be learnt in class and
• Practice Mode ‐ To be practiced at home, between classes
The design was required to be motivational and self learning with less involvement of the teacher. Also, gives users the flexibility to use the product anywhere and at any time.
The final concept designed was a system which comprised of two modes:
• Learning mode, an interactive table and
• Practice mode, a mobile memory game.
The test result showed that along with speeding up their learning, it also encouraged collaborative learning which enhances the learning experience.
