Varanasi is a major center for stone carving in Uttar Pradesh. Stone carving has been happening for a long time, even in ancient times. In northern India, undercut carving is popular. One famous product is an undercut elephant.
The stone block is cut with the help of a stone cutting machine. The length and breadth of the stone are marked with the measuring compass. The stone is cut to the desired length and breadth, and rough carving on the block is done in the initial stages. The elephant's head, trunk, and foot parts are all carved. Once the body part of the elephant is smoothened or made, even holes are drilled.
After drilling even holes, it is further drilled through each hole forming a block at the centre. This block is shaped like a baby elephant through the drilled holes. The holes become see-through and the baby elephant is visible.
