Historically India has been known for its various crafts and skilled craftsmen producing various articles in cottage and home industries.

Craftsmen in the current times have been rendered jobless due to the availability of mass-produced goods and have to search for other domains for work. This is an attempt to create a framework to provide a steady source of income to local craftsmen, using design at the forefront.

The project started with collaboration with Studio Coppre, which has already been working on reviving crafts and has been helping out the copper artisans in the Maharashtra region. They were keen on making an everyday carry copper water bottle to add to their portfolio of products. A daily object that could also be accessorised as a lifestyle product was what drew me closer towards this project.

Copper is a highly recyclable material and has been used by mankind for ages. It does not loose its properties and can be reused by melting down even from industrially made copper products. The day we live in requires us to pay larger attention to the world and the environment we live in, so the search for a sustainable material to complement copper could be no other than cork.

Cork has been in the wine industry since the 15th century for a reason. Thus came the idea of using cork as a stopper, which required a lot of design and technical know-how to be used in the context of an everyday carry water bottle. As a means to an end, the project concluded with design, detailing and creating engineering drawings as well as prototypes, for two SKUs of copper water bottles that can be marketed towards different domains of society, in India as well as abroad.
