Dravidian Bull
Senior sculptor, Mr. Bharath is from the Mandya district. He was trained at Bidadi and sculpting for seven years. This is his fourth camp at Shilpakala academy. He is an award winner of the 2016 Shilpakala academy. Junior sculptor, Mr. Muthu from Ramanagar district. He was trained by the Canara Bank Foundation and sculpting for five years. They carved the statue of Dravidian Bull mixed with traditional looks, which is 4 feet tall.
Dravidian Bull is a symbol of strength and agility from the ancient times of the Dravidian culture. It is compared to the recent incident about Jallikattu. Jallikattu is a traditional show where a bull such as the Pulikulam or Kangayam breeds is released into crowds of people. Multiple human participants attempt to grab the large hump on the Bull's back with both arms and hang on to it while the Bull tries to escape. Participants hold the hump for as long as possible, attempting to bring the Bull to a stop. In some cases, participants ride long enough to remove flags on the Bull's horns. Jallikattu is typically practiced in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations on Mattu Pongal day, which occurs annually in the month of January.
