Light is the magical beauty that can be watched for hours by admiration. The project starts with the thought of “Sustainable lighting solutions,” considering sustainable materials like LED, Glass, Bamboo etc.
“Light can not be created, but we can explore it.”
The project starts with exploring light in a different context and factors like Materials used in light shades, Reflection, Refraction, Natural sources of light, and How architecture plays a vital role in light.
As I belong to Solapur city, situated in the western part of Maharashtra, I started exploring local materials which can be used in light shades. Solapur has a long history of “ Handlooms, Handlooms,” and Solapuri Chadar ” is famous for its durability, Material and complex weaving patterns. Solapuri Chaddar is made from pure cotton. There are three basic steps of weaving Winding, Wharfing and loom. As these looms are hand-operated, 15-20 % of the loom was wasted during the winding and wharfing process.
This project shows the journey of designing a light shade and how this project narrowed down in the context of “ exploring and re-discovering the new weaving methods for leftover materials in looms to create a light shade which can be used in a home."
