Understanding Brahmi, the ancient Indian Script. The approach with which I started my project was to understand and try and learn the script - the basic form of how it is written, the visual grammar that it follows. To do this I had to go back in time through the information available in today’s time, in terms of references like books, websites, museums, inscriptions, pictures etc. I didn’t had any immediate output in my mind, though I knew outputs can be of any type or media, but later I finalized that into a book or an audio visual which speaks about that era. For me this project required a lot of understanding of the historical details and evidences. I was dealing with so many informations where one book is talking one thing and the other book is talking another thing, where it was difficult for me to select what to choose.
It was just like scratching the past with the available details stepping into that zone with my research and understanding.
My visits to places like National Museums both in New Delhi as well as Kolkata cleared a lot of my confusions and gave me totally a new perspective. And I could relate my readings from books and internet regarding brahmi and could comprehend with the real inscriptions, stone edicts in front.
