Recent studies say that the number and spread of sacred groves have drastically decreased during the past decade. Sacred groves, which are called 'Kavu,' are considered a unique entity of biodiversity, self-sustainability, and co-existence. It is also considered as a practice of animism in Kerala. The common man of this land who believed in the presence of spirit in all the animated and inanimate objects around him revered both the elements and natural phenomena. They co-existed as a part of the agricultural lifestyle and culture. The change in lifestyle and culture made the Sacred groves disappear in a large context. The existence of sacred groves is very much dependent on all the activities around it. The newer generation and their migration towards cities and towns affected the rituals and traditions around these Groves.
This project attempts to create awareness about Sacred Groves in younger generations through an illustrated fantasy fiction. The story developed for this project is based on my childhood memories and experiences of my village where I used to live. The story's primary thread is based on my village like many other villages in Kerala, which faced many development activities throughout these years. There was a drastic change in their geography and biodiversity. This book will recreate my lost memories through fiction that tells about the unique and sensitive co-existence of People and natural elements in and around a Kavu. The narrative also tries to encapture some of the regional culture and folklore characteristics of a Kavu. The project targets the younger generation to provide insight into the idea of Kavu and the related elements.
