The aim of this project is to design a portable transit house for Agarias (salt workers). In the monsoon, Rann of Kutch is submerged in water. As the water recedes in October, the salt workers occupy to set up their salt pans. They dig wells to pump out the brine, which is collected into the salt pans for natural evaporation, leaving behind salt crystals. Braving a harsh 40 deg C during the day, the salt workers live for seven months in the shacks set beside the salt pans.
The project is an elaborate take on the design of a transit shelter, which fits into the salt workers’ lifestyle without any hassle. The process included a detailed understanding of the scenarios of the context and surrounding, and understanding the user needs and requirements. The design process covers not only the function and usability but also a comprehensive knowledge of form and how the structure will fit into the context.
