Evolution of the Automobile

  • Printer-friendly version

In the beginning, all vehicles basically looked the same. In 1885, the new motorized vehicles did not have a body or shell. Inventors were more concerned about function than form. The first car comprised an engine, three wheels and a frame all exposed for easy access. This period in history witnessed the transition from the early horse carriage to the famous and popular Ford Model T.  How did the car form evolve over time?

In an attempt to study the factors that are responsible for establishing the emotional relationship between a vehicle and their users, the study of the history of car body over time is divided into seven different eras. Each era is earmarked by a particular style or design aesthetic. A number of cross -over factors including fashion, makeup, hairstyles, art and architecture, popular culture and movies may have contributed to the particular aesthetic of the time. Automobile semantics seems to have followed an arc of speed and power reaching its zenith at the missile era in U.S. politics. In the modern age, have designers arrived full circle using organic forms, animals and bio designing as part of their emotional expression?
