Originally, the covers of Chandamama were printed using four-color process, while the illustrations inside consisted of line drawings. Unlike traditional comic books, each page of Chandamama featured illustrations, with the exception of the Chitra-katha column. These illustrations were not only visually appealing but also stayed true to the spiritual messages they portrayed. Chandamama effectively captured significant moments in history and drew stories from various Indian texts, both contemporary and historical. The main features of the magazine were written by Kutumbarao and all the stories revolved around a common theme of moral values. The narratives included elements of mythology, epics, fables, parables, and even oral traditions.
