Detailed Description

The National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, established in 1961, is one of Asia's premier design institutions. NID functions independently under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and is recognised as an "Institution of National Importance" under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014. The Ahmedabad campus offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Bachelor of Design (B.Des.), Master of Design (M.Des.), and doctoral degrees across disciplines such as Industrial Design, Communication Design, Textile and Apparel Design, and Ceramic & Glass Design. The campus is well known for its modernist architecture, which reflects a Bauhaus-inspired philosophy of "learning by doing" and was created with involvement from the Sarabhai family as well as foreign advisors like Charles and Ray Eames. Through programmes like the Railway Design Centre and Design Clinic for MSMEs, NID collaborates with industry outside of academia to provide a hands-on, research-based approach to design education.
