This was the fourteenth edition of the newsletter in July-December 1989. In this edition they have mentioned the students' projects. They are: Electronic Voting Machine for India- Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were conceived to replace conventional voting using ballot paper. The project of complete product design of the EVMs—from concept development to final prototype building—was assigned to IDC by BEL. The design team includes Prof. A.G. Rao and Prof. Ravi Poovaiah. The Electronic Voting Machine -- In this new machine, there is a button for each candidate. Up to sixteen candidate names can be accommodated in one unit. Units can be connected together for a greater number of candidates. An audible ‘beep’ confirms the casting and recording of the vote by a voter. Design Methodology -- For a ‘product in the public eye‘ like a voting machine, it was important to study the existing voting system. The design team visited actual voting sites during the by-elections in Andhra Pradesh in February '88. Alternative Selection: Several concepts were presented to BEL and the Election Commission for feedback and evaluation. Based on these concepts, 3-D mock-up models were made to show alternative solutions. A detailed description of electronic voting machines has been given in this edition of the newsletter. In the news section they have included Product Semantics'89; Prof. U. Athavankar presented a paper on "The Semantic Profile of Products’ in the Symposium on "Product Semantics’ organised by the University of Industrial Arts, Helsinki. The well-known illustrator and cartoonist, Mickey Patel, has joined the faculty of IDC. Prof. Uday Athavankar and Prof. Kirti Trivedi participated in the conference and workshop on the theme "Cultural Identity and Design" organised by the International Design Forum, Ulm, West Germany 1989. World Design Congress, Nagoya- PROF. Nadkarni was an invited speaker on the theme "Change and Dissemination’ at World Design Congress, Nagoya, Japan. He presented a paper entitled "Diffusion and Communication of Design: The Indian Scene". The paper concerns the degradation of order and aesthetical values in our environment, and the possible causes which have led to this situation.
