Traditional Toran from Kolhapur
The initial and vital part of making of toran is making the bamboo structure. Mr.Yuvraj Sonwale, a very kind artisan who had shown and explained me the process of making bamboo structure. The Bamboo structure making has been perused by the community called ‘Burud’. Burud community in Maharashtra is the artisans traditionally engaged in bamboo crafts. ‘Burud gali’ is the lane where burud communities inhabit in Kolhapur. The process of making Bamboo frame starts with collecting bamboo from Western Ghats at Sahyadri range. After processing it will be cut into many sizes. Then they will be assembled in a very particular geometrical pattern by nailing small pieces of bamboo stripes on a thick bamboo stick. Afterwards these structured frames are sent for decoration.
