Typical of the people across Ladakh, the locals here are warm, friendly and peace loving. Apart from home stays and guesthouses the locals also practice some cultivation to bring in some income. They use the natural spring water for cooking and cleaning, grow their own food and get milk from their own cattle.
There are 4 schools in Lamayuru, and there isn’t a single child who does not attend school. While basic items of necessity are available in the tiny, well-equipped village shop, for all other things like electronics, phone recharges and ATM withdrawals etc. one has to travel to the village of Khaltse located 15 kms away.
Whether you are a headmaster or a schoolteacher a farmer or an old grandmother everybody does a 3 km walk uphill to the monastery for their sole source of drinking water.
