In Chamoli, Uttarakashi and Pithoragraph districts, the Bhotia tribes weave distinctive carpets and ashans (seat covers) with designs that have strong Tibetan and Kashmiri influence. The designs fall into two categories- stylized geometric motifs and floral and dragon designs showing a Chinese influence. The carpets are characterized by a boldness of colour and motif.
Knotted pile carpets are woven mainly on a commercial basis, dyed with natural raw materials. But presently due to the vibrancy of the synthetic colours, it’s been taken into practice too. Bhotia designs are however been placed by better selling Tibetan motifs. The designs fall into the category of stylized geometric motifs, floral motifs and dragon designs sharing a Chinese influence. Carpets are also categorized by a boldness of colour and motif. The wool used is fine wool, which is almost 30% of the raw wool. So the remaining 70% of the raw material is somehow gone for either waste or some other products with a blend of other materials.
The motif designs are composed of vibrant colour combinations. Few grey design patterns are obtained by blending natural shades (light and dark) of undyed wool.
