Ability to create serial innovations is the key to success for today’s industry. With the shortening of product’s marketable lifecycle, this ability has become the key differentiator for the industry. Prof. B. K. Chakravarthy has formulated a collaborative innovation model and implemented it successfully in the industry during his two and half decades of industry and academic career.
In this section, he showcases 'Serial Innovation' through his exploration in the fuel dispenser market. He has designed path breaking fuel dispensers over the decades, each ousting the previous one from the market.
He believes that the core of serial innovation is Collaborative Design that seeks a synergetic consideration of the three cores:
• User insight,
• New technology, manufacturing & materials
• and Creative ideation.
For a successful product, innovation has to be multi-nodal as represented by the petals of the sunflower, which is complete only when all petals are in perfect synchronization. The third important aspect that he highlights is Innovation by Design, the interaction of innovation and design in a given context. For any innovative product development, one has to first design the innovation process by using the collaborative innovation design model and then using this innovation process, design an innovative product complying with the sunflower model of innovation.
