Khelghar is a not-for-profit organization that provides free of cost supplementary education 1 to children in a slum area in Pune, Maharashtra. They focus on the children's holistic development and deliver what the children's schools cannot give to, like life skills education2. The organization employs seven teachers who work with 150 students from the slum. Alongside this, there are five mentors and the founder who hold strategic positions in the organization. Along with guiding the teachers, they conduct workshops for other social workers, take up consultancy projects, and publish material to spread their methodology.
1. Supplementary education comprises of all out-of-school learning. Particularly classes focused on providing additional support for curriculum subjects, including all languages, history, and cultural enrichment activities such as faith, arts, and sports [NRSE, 2020].
2. Lifeskills education encompasses skills under the broader themes of empowerment, employability, citizenship, and learning [UNICEF, 2019].
I worked with the organization to improve the teachers' capacity building experience and create more growth opportunities for them. The challenges faced by this organization in the context of teachers are unique since not all the teachers employed there have formal training in education and come from varied backgrounds - some even come from the slum area that Khelghar is currently working with and are educated till 10th or 12th. The final deliverable is a teacher exchange program and other scaffolding components that will provide a platform for the teachers to grow as educators, social workers, and employees of Khelghar.
