Facelifting of Eicher 485 Tractor is a mobility design project by Lavendra Kumar Shukla, done in the 2015-17 batch. The Indian tractor industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation, with agriculture serving as the backbone of the economy, contributing 18% of the nation's GDP, 10% of exports, and providing livelihood for over 62% of the population. With only 42% of land effectively used for agriculture, the scarcity of farm labor, and increasing urban encroachment, there is a pressing need for better mechanized solutions to sustain productivity and ensure food security. Tractors, once limited to cultivation, have now expanded into versatile roles such as construction material transport, gradually replacing traditional methods. However, challenges such as low penetration in rural areas, high costs of advanced machines, and the dominance of medium HP models highlight the gaps in accessibility and innovation. Revamping the tractor industry through improved design, affordability, and technology integration is vital for attracting new generations of farmers, strengthening cultivation strategies, and sustaining India’s agricultural growth in the next decade.
