India has been a powerhouse for vast cultural and ethnic diversity and craft. This has enabled a variety of motifs, techniques, and crafts to flourish in various parts of this land. Woodcraft has been an integral part of the rich tradition of handicrafts in India. The hallmarks of Indian wooden furniture have always been durability, ethnic flavor, elegance, and design, as well as attractive colors, unmatched workmanship, and subtle elegance. Even today, traditional Indian craftsmen use the simplest of tools and adhere to their forefathers' style, which has helped keep the traditions alive. Today, craftsmen are engaged in making furniture, products for everyday use, toys, and decorative items that are in demand in the market. One such work is Sankheda wood craft in Gujarat, wherein the artist puts forth their ideas about mythology and emotions in their work, which is losing its potential market. As an industrial design student, the area of work I have dealt with in this project is to understand the particular woodcraft furniture, understand the artisan issues, and explore various possibilities and ideas to reposition the craft in a higher segment of the market.
