In visual communication, an illustration is a visual aid used to communicate ideas, concepts, instructions or processes. It is a combination of art and information that aids or complements data. An illustration as opposed to a text explanation can improve perceptibly and thus help the viewer understand the topic better.

They are used in print and digital, media and publishing in various forms like posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films.
