About 350 million tons of agricultural waste is estimated to be generated in India every year and some portion of this estimate belong to wastes generated from trees and crops like tree barks, leaves, husks, residues, etc. These wastes are popularly being explored by material designers to create sustainable materials that can be used in numerous areas like construction, product design, furniture design, and more.
This project aims to explore such waste materials, combine them together with natural resins and come up with a composite material which can potentially replace conventional commercial materials. For this project, the fibers from the royal palm and areca tree leaves were considered and is mixed with natural resin that was finalized during the exploration phase and the final output material is obtained which shows strong mechanical and chemical properties that are suitable to be used in replacement to everyday plastic and wooden products. Using this material, a chair was designed which was inspired from the form of the palm leave sheathes and the activity in which the children in village areas use the palm leaves for playing.
