A UNESCO world heritage site, Lal Qila is the largest fort built during the Mughal Era. It was begun in 1639 and completed in 1648. The name Red Fort comes from the massive red sandstone walls that surround it. Even today, it is an eloquent reminder of the glory of the Mughal Empire. Red Fort is the venue of Independence Day celebrations on the 15th of August in modern India.
