The traditional inlay woodwork requires a lot of perfection, practice and fine manual labour. The process of making inlay woodworks is a carefully intricate one. Though this art had undergone changes and challenges, the survival of this art owes credit to the persistence and originality of the artisans of the region. Inlay is a technique of inserting pieces of contrasting colors into the hollow spaces to create a design. It involves engraving foliage patterns, and simple everyday designs are inlaid with either acrylic, plastic, bronze or camel bone. Various products such as inlaid table and chair sets, chest boxes, corners, chess boards, jewelry boxes, trays, elephants and several other items of everyday use are easily spotted in Hoshiarpur.
Apart from traditional products, small utility items like tray, pen stand, jewellery box, photograph frame, flower base, charkha, agarbati stand, etc. are created to meet the market demand. Very few artisans are practicing this craft in Hoshiarpur district but scarcity of Sheesham wood and declining figure of handicraft wood inlay artisans have posed a real threat to this beautiful traditional craft.
