Workshops by Greg Daly
The GIAN Course on Specialty Glazes and Colour Development Course was conducted by Greg Daly and Sandeep Manchekar from January 30, 2018 to Monday, February 5, 2018 at IDC, IIT Bombay. The GIAN (Global Initiative of Academic Networks) Course is supported by the MHRD, Government of India. In this session, students got to learn about the structure of glaze and the development of colour in a variety of glaze types and finishes. The development of the glaze and colour will be through various testing methodologies, for example line blend, tri-axial blend, square blend, and colour blends. The testing & development programme will lead to the student developing their own palette of glazes. Occupational health and safety instruction was an integral part of this course. This course was organised into two modules. Module A: Glaze Theory and Colour Development: January 30-February 3, 2018 Module B: Lustre Glazes: 4 February–5 February, 2018. The first module of two days on Lustre Glazes was conducted by Greg Daly, and the second module of two days on Lustre Glazes was conducted by Sandeep Manchekar.

Workshop on Communication Design Principles
The Communication Design Program (CDP) was conducted on May 20th–29th, 2013 at IDC, IIT Bombay. CDP 2013 was a hands-on programme with a special focus on photography and understanding the principles of visual communication. This programme is envisaged such that students from different cultures form teams and collectively explore and address design issues. Students from Kansas State University also participated in this program. During the workshop, Indian students engaged in individual as well as group activities in and outside the classroom and formed teams with American students. This course is designed to foster a sense of inquiry in the minds of students, while engaging in art and design practices. The idea is to question design decisions and check for effective communication strategies. Indian students worked in collaboration with faculty and students from America and together gained valuable cultural experience. This ‘learning by doing’ programme was augmented with theory in the form of lectures and discussions.

National Design Innovation Workshop using TRIZ creative methodology
Innovative New Product Development, using 'TRIZ' creative methodology' was conducted on 17th and 18th May 2012 at IDC, IIT Bombay. TRIZ is a creative methodology that can help companies develop new products with a competitive advantage. Its origins are Russian, and it translates to ‘Theory of Inventive Problem Solving." TRIZ identifies and isolates sore points in a technical system (TS), which is either a product or process, frames a contradiction (administrative, technical, or physical), strengthens this contradiction, and resolves it. TRIZ has been successfully applied to develop breakthrough innovations, particularly those that are technical in nature. IDC at IIT Bombay conducted a 2-day workshop on New Product Development with an emphasis on the use of TRIZ as a methodology for creating innovative products. The sessions included the basic principles of TRIZ and its application, interspersed with case studies. The half-day TRIZ Clinic gave the participants an opportunity to apply the TRIZ method to solve their industry-specific problems. The participants are encouraged to bring their problems, which they can discuss in the clinic session. The following topics are discussed during the workshop: -Introduction to design. -New product development. -Introduction to TRIZ, contradictions and their resolutions. -Five levels of invention: system, subsystem, and super-system. -Laws of Technical Systems’ Evolution LTSE – the first four laws. other four laws. -Last law, the law of increasing idealization, dissected to evaluate convolution and its far-reaching effects. Innovative Design: Theory and Application with Case Studies -TRIZ Clinic: Technical Solutions to problems are given or brought by participants as part of their individual ongoing projects.

Workshop on Bamboo Craft
Bamboo, the fastest-growing biomass, is ecofriendly and a future material for designers. Bamboo craft, with its unique traditions, opens up new possibilities in "design expression" with woven forms. Bamboo Studio intends to nurture bamboo craft to create new products made of craft with industrial discipline and appropriate technologies. The workshop was a result of the collaborative efforts between Bamboo Studio, IDC, IIT Bombay, and Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Gadchiroli as a synergic step to reach out to the skilled craftspeople of that region with input from a product design and development perspective. This workshop introduced the crafters to new designs, new tools, small machines, moulds, jigs, and fixtures, treatments for borers and fungus, and colouring with natural dyes, etc.
