This was the thirteenth edition of the newsletter in January-June 1989. In this edition they have mentioned the projects of 1988. The projects mentioned are: plastic bicycles for children, Data Phone, Electronic Cash Register for Jwellers, Xerox machine, Dental Unit, Computer Support Furniture for Offices, Products in Bamboo, Taxi, Battery Powered Aircraft Towing Vehicles, Train Toilets, etc. Akara was an exposition of world calligraphy was held in 1988, under the sponsorship of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi. The exhibition was designed by Prof. R.K. Joshi of IDC. Akara attempted, and admirably succeeded, in giving fresh life to the living tradition of calligraphy—the art of art. They have added an obituary column to this. They have added heartfelt condolences to the death of Pandit Narendra Sharma—an eminent Hindi poet, philosopher, and writer, Manu Desai—the well-known art director and design symbology expert, Prof. B.S. Jagadish—the professor of the department of Mechanical Engineering, Fujio Watanabe—the well-known young Japanese illustrator and designer. The Ergonomics news was ISE-an Indian Society of Ergonomics (ISE) has been founded and registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act. ISE-OH-SE-an International Symposium on Ergonomics, Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment will be held in Bombay, 1991. New Equipment: IDC’s ergonomics laboratory has acquired the following new equipment under the MHRD and DST sponsored projects: Cycle Rickshaw Project, New Students etc. Another important news mentioned was about Expo ID. Exposure to Industrial Design was a 3-day course for industries that was organised at IDC. The course covered topics such as design process, design management, product planning, product ergonomics, aesthetics, creativity, product graphics, and so on. also mentioned about 20 years of IDC. A number of activities and events are planned to mark this occasion.

This was the fourteenth edition of the newsletter in July-December 1989. In this edition they have mentioned the students\' projects. They are: Electronic Voting Machine for India- Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were conceived to replace conventional voting using ballot paper. The project of complete product design of the EVMs—from concept development to final prototype building—was assigned to IDC by BEL. The design team includes Prof. A.G. Rao and Prof. Ravi Poovaiah. The Electronic Voting Machine -- In this new machine, there is a button for each candidate. Up to sixteen candidate names can be accommodated in one unit. Units can be connected together for a greater number of candidates. An audible ‘beep’ confirms the casting and recording of the vote by a voter. Design Methodology -- For a ‘product in the public eye‘ like a voting machine, it was important to study the existing voting system. The design team visited actual voting sites during the by-elections in Andhra Pradesh in February \'88. Alternative Selection: Several concepts were presented to BEL and the Election Commission for feedback and evaluation. Based on these concepts, 3-D mock-up models were made to show alternative solutions. A detailed description of electronic voting machines has been given in this edition of the newsletter. In the news section they have included Product Semantics\'89; Prof. U. Athavankar presented a paper on "The Semantic Profile of Products’ in the Symposium on "Product Semantics’ organised by the University of Industrial Arts, Helsinki. The well-known illustrator and cartoonist, Mickey Patel, has joined the faculty of IDC. Prof. Uday Athavankar and Prof. Kirti Trivedi participated in the conference and workshop on the theme "Cultural Identity and Design" organised by the International Design Forum, Ulm, West Germany 1989. World Design Congress, Nagoya- PROF. Nadkarni was an invited speaker on the theme "Change and Dissemination’ at World Design Congress, Nagoya, Japan. He presented a paper entitled "Diffusion and Communication of Design: The Indian Scene". The paper concerns the degradation of order and aesthetical values in our environment, and the possible causes which have led to this situation.

This was the fifteenth edition of the newsletter in January-March 1993. In the introduction of this edition, they have added Abhikalpa: Design Degree Show \'92, an exhibition of design projects by the students of IDC and IIT Bombay, which was held at the Nehru Centre. The Degree Show displays the work of young designers passing out of IDC and gives them an opportunity to present their ideas to the industry and the public at large. On another page they mentioned Design Experience 3. It was a seminar held as an accompaniment to the ‘Degree Show\' in 1992 at the Nehru Centre. This seminar on contemporary design applications aims at consolidating the work done by the past students of IDC who at present occupy various design positions and assessing their influence on the design applications in our country. The objective of the seminar was to draw attention to the problems connected with the dissemination of design knowledge, its application, and its realisation into workable solutions. In the Alumni Awards, IDc has instituted two awards for the best student projects: one in Industrial Design and the other in Visual Communication. 3-D Simulation System of the Heart as a Learning Aid The heart is the single most important organ in the human body and works non-stop from birth to death. The simulation system is designed to provide aspiring surgeons with a packaged learning aid. The student projects included are; Pictorial Guide-cum-Map of Deccan Trap; Traditional Children’s Games-A Visual Documentation. In the research projects they have included the redesign of an Indian style water closet and the cycle rickshaw project. They mentioned environmental design for voltas, a liquid nitrogen (LN2) container for IBP, a calligraphy workshop, new IDC publications, and so on in the news section.
