Detailed Description

This unique poster was made just for the arts theatre, The Academy, in London, and features the incredibly unusual artwork of Peter Strauss. This poster would have only had a modest print run. Strausfield, a German immigrant, worked as The Academy's internal poster designer from 1947 to 1980. The woodcut or linocut patterns that Straussfield used to create his posters are generally simple but incredibly powerful. The 1977 Indian film Shatranj Ke Khilari, written and directed by Satyajit Ray, is based on the short tale of the same name by Munshi Premchand. It was eventually distributed globally under the translated title "The Chess Players." Amjad Khan portrays General James Outram, and Richard Attenborough portrays Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the Nawab of Awadh.
