Detailed Description

This poster is for the film Neecha Nagar, an Indian Hindi language film, directed by Chetan Anand and written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas and Hayatullah Ansari, and produced by Rashid Anwar and A. Halim in 1946. It was a Hindi film adaptation in an Indian setting of Maxim Gorky’s 1902 play The Lower Depths. Neecha Nagar became the first Indian film to gain recognition at the Cannes Film Festival.

Artistic/Design Significance

"Neecha Nagar" holds the distinction of being the first Indian film to receive international recognition at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1946, it shared the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film (Best Film) award with eleven other feature films. Despite its success at Cannes, the film was never released in India, making it one of the most underrated films of its time. Despite this irony, "Neecha Nagar" remains a significant milestone in Indian cinema for its international acclaim and recognition.
