The movie tells the story of Hindu scholar Adi Shankaracharya, who popularised the Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism) school of thought in the eighth century. This film is a shining example of Kannada cinema's experimental film period. Sanskrit was used for the first time in an Indian film. It received four honours at the 31st National Film Awards: best picture, best writing, best cinematography, and best audiography.
