Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan were initially approached about playing the role, but both actors declined. As a result, Anil Kapoor was given the part. Vinod Kumar (Dilip Kumar) portrays a devout, law-abiding person who commits crime as retaliation. Vasant Kanetkar, a renowned Marathi playwright, wrote the well-known Marathi play Ashroonchi Zhali Phule, which served as the inspiration for the film.
